- mini workshop to finalize conference CD-ROM. |
On February 29th, 2000, we held an initial meeting of the minds at the MIT Sea Grant Collegium to flesh out the possibility of holding a workshop that would be useful to people who live and work in relation to the Gulf of Maine and its water related resources and tributaries. It was felt that there was a lot of interest in holding a focused conference on Marine GIS Technology in the Boston area as a precursor to other activities that might benefit from a publication that would be created as a result of the meeting and would set up linkages to technologies that contribute to the economic health of the region. We decided that to do this we had to limit ourselves to a 6 month window of opportunity and start laying the ground work for such a meeting to take place. The meeting would have invited specialists that would address issues and focal points that relate to Marine GIS technology and the sciences and industries that make use of it. It would also provide a forum for users of the technology to voice their opinions about its use and to suggest improvements and vehicles of convenience that would improve their understanding and use of the best and most practical application of such tools and data. We also decided that the fisherman of the Gulf of Maine would be a priority and that every attempt would be made to enhance their attendance and participation. |
This workshop is being organized by specialists who work with Marine GIS Information and stand to gain by interacting with professionals and lay persons who share a desire to improve their understanding of the tools that are used to analyze and manipulate data and knowledge that is being assembled for the marine realms of the region. This meeting is meant to be a building block for past as well as future groups who are planning to use information to make decisions about the use of the marine resources of our region. It is also a chance for specialists from around the world to share their knowledge and expertise in dealing with similar situations. It is our intent to invite a number of international participants and as the program develops will list them as part of the program. An initial product that will be used by the participants will be a conference CD-ROM with public domain software that will allow the participants to work with some of the information that will be discussed. A product of the conference will be an improved version of the conference CD that will include the list of conference participants (co-authors) and hopefully a consensus of ideas and information that will prove to be useful for the future of the marine realms. The conference activity would be especially successful if fishermen would be able to use the CD-ROM as a tool in their work and play in the Gulf of Maine and use it to link to other relevant data and information resources.
