Massachusetts State waters Image left - outline of state boundary, geographic projection. Portion of larger scale chart section as locus map, with Minerals Management Service lease block areas in the federal zone (229k). Note that only the State waters are the only areas not already divided into lease blocks. Note also that the bathymetric contours from this chart indicate that almost all of the area within the state boundary is very shallow, <20 fathoms. Mass Division of Marine Fisheries fishery zones including town boundaries (212k). Map of Ipswich Bay off Cape Ann with a one mile square proposed for reseeding. In 1997 the inshore scallop fleet caught an estimated 400,000 pounds (whole weight) in a similar small area nearby. This area seems to have a significant scallop population every 10 to 15 years, indicating the conditions for survival and growth are good, but that settlement is sporadic and the limiting factor for a healthy annual fishery. |
