22 January 2004 9:30 AM - noon SMAST University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 706 South Rodney French Blvd New Bedford, MA Welcome Harlyn Halvorson Description of Workshop Ron Smolowitz "The NEFMC will be developing a Omnibus Habitat Amendment over the next two years. The Council will be considering the idea of habitat research areas in this Amendment. The SSWG would like to propose that one area be chosen to conduct habitat research on the impact of aquaculture/resource enhancement strategies. The area should be located to (1) encompass several types of common substrates, (2) contain EFH of many species, (3) have relatively low fishing activity, (4) have easy access for research purposes. Research would include impacts on various species due to shellfish seeding, predator control, harvesting strategies, moored arrays, feeding and waste production."
