(09/15/00) Here is an example of paper plotter output using the LORAN C chain system. These systems were in wide use aboard commercial fishing vessels by the late 1970's, and could be set to a scale of 1 to 1000 miles. Note handwritten numbered references to wrecks and hangs on logbook pages. Many of these systems are still in use today although they have gradually been augmented or replaced with video plotters and PC based applications. Note also how only a small fraction of the area is towed intensively and most is not fished at all.
